Human rights must be defined, protected and achieved in different cultural contexts. Contemporary human rights ideas emerged from the European Enlightenment and so have inevitably been influenced by the narratives of Western modernity. On the other hand, the notion of filial piety derives from unique features of East Asian ethics and practices developed over many generations. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the compatibility between filial piety and human rights and is based on a critical social work perspective. A secondary data analysis was conducted to re-analyse and re-interpret selected results from documentary research on human rights and filial piety in contemporary times. This analysis was enhanced by adding insights from consultation with a group of human rights educators and researchers in New Zealand and Australia. An altered mode of thematic analysis was used to identify major themes and patterns in an integrated and holistic way.

The findings from the analysis indicate that Korea represents an important and unique location for human rights practice and research, given its East Asian cultural heritage, the impact of rapid industrialisation and modernisation, and the combination of different religious traditions. Further aspects include the experience of the Democracy Movement in which human rights ideals played an important role in the public consciousness. It is asserted that the values of filial piety and ancestor worship have served as core cultural heritages and are basically compatible with certain aspects of human rights. From this unique experience, a particularly Korean perspective on human rights is emerging, and this can make a significant contribution to understanding human rights on a global level. Further discussion on the compatibility between human rights and filial piety and its implications for practice is developed incorporating the aforementioned critical social work perspective.
