This study investigated how various proficiency levels of L2 learner groups with different mother tongues acquire the suprasegmentals of the target language, Korean. It was expected that certain foreign learner groups of Korean depending on the variables of L1 and levels were more likely to fluently produce L2 suprasegmentals. One hundred two subjects with nine groups ((English, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese) * (beginning, intermediate, advanced)) and with native Korean speakers as a control group participated in the experiment. The results show that the L1 background language and L2 proficiency exhibit dissimilar influence on the acquisition of the L2 suprasegmentals. More precisely, the L1 effect decreased in the later stage of L2 experience; the advanced levels of all three L1 groups acquired L2 prosody in a similar degree. Also the L1 effect triggers an uneven influence on natives’ judging the fluency of L2 suprasegmentals; speech rate appears to be the most important cue, whereas the F0-related cues do not.
