The purpose of inquiry is to inspect life and athletic experience of high school Taekwondo student athletes and to provide fundamental data to deeply understand and examine their reality. A total of four participants were selected, consisting of two female combative athletes and two poomsae athletes. Stories of the participants were examined and analyzed based on data that was collected by one-to-one in-depth interview following the procedure of narrative inquiry along with analysis of current and past athletic experiences and their life.
The following conclusions were obtained from this inquiry. First, research participants first encountered Taekwondo with various motives such as simple curiosity, recommendation from parents, and family influence. Second, the participants became student athletes since middle school, because of several reasons such as desire to accomplish, recommendation from coaches, and concerns about their career, etc. Third, the participants were living under limited life as a member of Taekwondo athletes and experienced various difficulties due to hierarchical system related to subculture of the athletic training club. Fourth, the participants were experiencing difficulties in terms of confusion and conflict about implication of dual roles between the student and the athlete. Last, the participant made more specific future plan by building faster and clear objectives and career plans comparing to general students.
