Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the capabilities of major AAC applications to develop a novel AAC application that increase communication efficiency for people with developmental disabilities. Background: There is growing interest in AAC due to its advantages of being used for various purposes by people with different types of disabilities. However, people with developmental disabilities are not actively using AAC compared to other disabled people. To solve this situation, it is important to identify pain points and inconveniences of using AAC from the perspective of people with development disabilities and to identify the status of existing commercial AAC. Method: This study investigated and summarized the functions of the six popular AAC applications (2 domestic apps and 4 international apps). Results: As a result, eight categories (symbols, voice, sentences, screens, menus, operating systems, screens, and others) and 38 features were derived. In particularly, we introduce features common to all apps, different features between domestic apps and international apps, and unique features provided only in one application. Application: Through this study, we hope that it will lead to the development of AACs that can communicate efficiently by improving understanding of AAC"s usage status and providing ways to express quickly what people with developmental disabilities.
