This paper focuses on the Phonological Development of p- > f- in Late Middle Chinese(henceforth LMC), and tries to interpret its forming and interior structures with the Non-linear Phonology, specially Feature Geometry Theory and Underspecification Theory. This thesis develops as follow: In chapter Ⅱ, data concerning the phonological development of p- > f- in LMC are presented. Chapter Ⅲ is divided into two sections according to the content. First of all, based on the several problems of the previous analyses by Karlgren(2007), Chao(1941), Zhou(1981), Kono(2010), and Pulleyblank(1984), we explained labiodentalization of labials to be a result of labials being followed by the complex glide jw- plus a centralized of back vowels. On the next step, we proposes an alternative analysis of the phonological development of p- > f- in LMC. Namely, labiodentalization is an assimilation of initials to finals in highness and backness, which explain assimilation from a functional motivations. The alternative analysis shows a systematic relationship among the labiodentalization of labials in LMC and can easily be re-explained through the frame work of Non-linear Phonology as co-spreading of [+high], [+back] and [+cont] of the following final to the labial node of the preceding labial initial. Finally, comparing with previous analysis based by linear phonology, the Non-linear phonological analysis shows the adequacy, economical efficiency and simplicity of the explanation.
