Kwon, Woo-jin. 2002. A Sociolinguistic Study on Newspaper Titles. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea, 10(2). This study took a sociolinguistic approach to the interrelations between the factualness of newspaper titles and the readers. One of the major roles of a newspaper is to deliver objective information to the public, and any articles carried in one should be factual and neutral with no doubt. However, the reality has been that there are many articles that do not meet the requirement. Major daily newspapers were investigated to find some cases of the titles that were little in objectiveness or neutralness. They were then presented to the readers for their reactions, who were asked to read and compare the actual titles found in the newspapers and some fake ones. The concern was how each of the groups of articles was appropriate, interesting and reliable. The results were rather interesting. While the readers regarded objectiveness as one of the major characteristics of newspaper titles, they preferred to read the articles carrying interesting and opinionative titles. This inclination of the readers to prefer opinionative and subjective titles to factual and objective ones may play a part in the increasing trend of newspaper titles' losing objectiveness. The results of the study suggest that we should be aware of the seriousness of it.
