This article focuses on the super aging society and the elderly living alone depicted in the Japanese movie “Ora, Ora Be Goin′ Alone.” In 2007, Japan entered a super-aged society in which the percentage of elderly people aged 65 or older exceeded 21% of the total population. Especially, in Japan, solitary deaths and increased suicide rates among elderly people have become a social problem. The movie focuses on the problems of the elderly living alone and realistically reproduces their loneliness and emptiness through various movie techniques, such as body, scenery, color contrast, and sound. In addition, the movie showed her efforts and changes at a personal level in order to overcome the isolation and loneliness of elderly people living alone through Momoko’s example, and sent a message that she respected and supported her mature old age. This is meaningful in resisting the violent reality of today’s Japanese society, where hatred and discrimination against the elderly are intensifying due to the increase in the elderly population. It is also significant in that it challenges the existing limited common sense and image of the elderly and presents various narratives for the elderly.
