The concept of the fictional turn that was put forward in the 1990s is one of the many turns in translation studies and has inspired robust research in languages and cultures. Based on the fictional turn, this study investigates the community interpreter as a protagonist in Interpreter of Maladies (1999) and two translations. For this purpose, this study attempts to examine the feasibility of sentiment analysis as a research method to show how fictional depictions of the community interpreter are portrayed. Sentiment analysis is used for identifying sentiments embedded in text data. This paper conducted a sentiment analysis concerning?the degrees of neutral, negative, and positive sentiments implied in the usage of the lexicon in each text. Findings show that sentiment scores between ST and TT demonstrate considerable variability. A comparative analysis between TT1 and TT2 also reveals that the fictional interpreter is not detached from socio-cultural contexts. Based on these outcomes, this study suggests the practical implications of sentiment analysis as a research method in translation studies. (Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Korea)
