In accordance with the regulatory requirements for preventing radiological risks to thepublic health and environment, the radiological impacts on the public around the radioactive wastedisposal facility should be evaluated to confirm whether the performance goal is satisfied. In this study, therefore, we developed the biosphere model for calculating the annual effective dose of the criticalgroup during the post-closure period of the LILW (Low- and Intermediate-Level radioactive Waste)complex disposal facility using the GoldSim. The receptor and exposure pathways to be assessed, andthe mathematical model by each exposure pathway were determined considering characteristics specificto the disposal facility, based on the Korean regulatory guideline that provides method and procedure forassessing the exposure dose from radioactive effluents released to the environment during the operationof the nuclear power plant. Data (such as dose conversion factors, bioaccumulation factors, transfercoefficients) required in the assessment were constructed as a database file in the format of MS-Exceland can be directly applied as input file for the GoldSim-based assessment tool. Through performing acase study for normal and human intrusion scenarios of the complex disposal facility on the basis of aspecific emplacement scheme, it was confirmed that the GoldSim-based biosphere model implementedin this study is proper to calculate the exposure dose by pathway and the total effective dose for thecritical group, which can be applied to demonstrate whether the disposal facility meets its performancegoal. The Goldsim-based biosphere model proposed in this paper can be applied to both individual andcomplex disposal facility for LILW, linking with radionuclide transport model, groundwater flow model, and etc. In addition, it is expected to be utilized for more diverse purposes provided that it is improvedand/or upgraded by reflecting various features of the radioactive waste management facility in the future.
