Although the number of independent voters continues to grow, we still know little about how non-partisan voters respond to electoral competitions and polarized politics. Revisiting the 2012 presidential elections in the United States and South Korea, we investigate the interaction between independent voters and political contexts. The main finding is that the independents in these two democracies differ with respect to electoral participation and significance despite their similar traits. This paper demonstrates that electoral competitions and polarized politics affect independents’ voting behaviors. This rare comparative study of the presidential elections in two democracies sheds light on how independent voters behave in diverse political contexts.
