The content of public education should be carefully developed based on consideration of its societal impact and the impact on the next generation. This is because it is symbolic in nature. The purpose of this study is to analyze the risk of teaching on the notion of gender equality in the 2022 revised curriculum. From a cultural anthropological perspective, the symbol that the notion of gender equality contains not only the rights of social minority, but also the hilosophical claim that we should not constrain the pursuit of sexual desire at all. In addition, this study predicts the problems that will occur in our society when homosexuality becomes cultural ‘symbol.’
To this end, first, we critically examined the ideological background of the notion of gender equality by illuminating the revolutionary changes in Western philosophy that emerged in the 19th century. Second, drawing from symbolic policy perspective, we argue that education is symbolic in nature, and thus, the above-mentioned philosophical background must be accepted as truth. Lastly, we predicted the problems that may occur in Korea when gender equality is taught in schools.
Finally, we concluded our study with the propositions as follows. The content of the public education should be based on the universal truth or at least the universally accepted norms, given that its function is to integrate people in a country. If the vast majority of citizens agree on teaching on the notion of gender equality even if they know what will happen as we predicted in this study, then, it can be said to be okay to do so.
