In this article, we examined the early aspects of the modernization of Russian icons. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Russian icon was gradually changed into style similar to Western European portraits while accepting humanistic elements. Parsuny portrait, changes of Claymo, depiction of real life in Russia, and detailed depiction of the background were concrete signs of the new icon style. In particular, the depiction of the traditional costumes such as the Lubaha of the 17th century Russian icon signaled the arrival of a new era in Russian icon.
However, the 17th century Russian icon did not completely break with the old traditional style. Russian icon at that time revealed an eclectic aspect that blended traditional styles with Western European realism techniques. This aspect shows that it produced a result that is closer to a new transformation of the old than to the emergence of a new Russian icon. This is because the Russian icons of the 17th centuries were in the experimental stage of partially borrowing new ones while adhering to the traditions.
