Effects of Critical Literacy on Korean KindergartenersSongyi Lee & Christian KimAbstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of CL on the perception of racial diversity and the possibility of change in perception among Korean kindergarteners. For this purpose, a qualitative research was conducted which involved 24 five-year-olds. In the data analysis of this study, thematic analysis was used to divide and categorize the collected data from the research. The children’s perception of race had changed after the CL education. Also, three positive effects of CL were found. These effects are 1) change in perception of race, 2) understanding of the reason why there are many white characters in picture books, 3) improvement in ability to express one's opinion on race. With appropriate guidance from the teacher, CL classes can be helpful to Korean kindergarteners in understanding controversial topics such as race.Key Words: Critical Literacy, Race, Korean Kindergarteners, Fairy Tales, Critical Attitude
