The article addresses the significance of digital space in preserving the memory and history of Baku, Azerbaijan. It centers on the Mehelle Project, a digital storytelling project that confronts the spectacle of Baku"s urban reconstruction and beautification, especially the demolition of Sovetsky district, which saw over fifty thousand residents displaced for a modern park with amenities. The Mehelle Project utilizes digital mapping technology to record and preserve Baku"s physical environment and human social network, providing users with an opportunity to re-envision and transform these spaces in their imagination. This project goes beyond the mere nostalgia or ruin aesthetics; it actively engages its users in listing and recreating memories of places. In this vein, it challenges the homogenized, contemporary representations of Baku found in the official and popular discourse that dominates social media platforms. The project serves as evidence of the capability of digital platforms to preserve and reinterpret the cultural memory of the post-Soviet urban landscape. It offers an alternative narrative structure that coexists with the rapidly modernizing landscapes of Baku.
