Rudolf Kjellén is credited with coining the term Geopolitics and elevating the discipline, and Haushofer, who is the focus of this study, is the first person in Germany to inherit and develop Kjellén's geopolitical ideas. In his main book, Geopolitics of the Pacific, Haushofer tried to explain how the behavior of countries facing the Pacific Ocean is influenced by the space of the Pacific Ocean. In other words, the Geopolitics of the Pacific, which Haushofer argued, has its basis in the fact that the natural space is transformed into a living space with history, and the behavior of countries facing it and the development of nations have a special geographical character on the Pacific coast. Japan’s acceptance of Geopolitics is linked to the ideology of the “Whole World as a Single House” and is regarded as the theoretical basis for the implementation of the Greater East Asia policy. The idea of a Japan-centered “Greater East Asia” and that of “Pacific geopolitics centered on Japan” advocated by Haushofer are intertwined and have a common thread. Furthermore, in the reception of Haushofer’s Geopolitics in Japan, the will to “self-defense” and the will to “extension of Japan” as Japan’s choices, emphasized in his view of Japan, are thought to be accepted and consolidated together. This is viewed as the manner in which “Geopolitics” has been embraced in Japan.
