Objectives: In this study, we examined the core duties and specialized areas of the Korean Certified Health Education Specialist (KCHES), identified the performance fields of the KCHES in health promotion, and analyzed the required abilities for the job. This was done to derive field-focused job competencies and abilities that the KCHES required to enhance their responsibilities. Methods: From the reports published between 2008 and 2023, we analyzed ten reports containing the theme “KCHES” and the guidelines for health promotion programs in local health centers, where the KCHES include the recommended personnel, and derived the job competencies and required abilities of field workers. Results: The field-focused job competencies of the KCHES were divided into (a) essential competencies for the job and (b) job-based competencies. The former comprises competencies of communication, integrated thinking, motivation enhancement and mediation, leadership, and work ethics. The latter involves competencies in overall work and specialty, needs assessment, health planning, implementation, evaluation, program management, and health information management. Conclusion: A curriculum based on field-focused job competencies and an effective quality management system will contribute to establishing the identity of the KCHES and strengthening their capacities in health promotion.
