This paper aims to examine the characteristics of Motoya Yukiko’s novels by analyzing the fragmented selves and methods of connecting with others among young female protagonists featured in the novels, from “腑抜けども、悲しみの愛を見せろ”(2004) to “自分を好きになる方法)”(2013). The first chapter of the main body explores the aspects of depression, sexual complexes, obsessions, and relationship addiction in the female protagonists of “腑抜けども、悲しみの愛を見せろ”(2004), “生きているだけで、愛”(2006), “あの子の考えることは変”(2009), and “ぬるい毒”(2011). The female protagonists in Motoya's novels are often in their early 20s, have only a high school education, and come from the provinces. For these poorly educated women who moved to Tokyo during a period of low economic growth, the dreams of employment, marriage, and self-realization are distant. In the second chapter of the main body, I discuss how the protagonists' depression and sense of helplessness are intertwined with the social structure. Additionally, I examine how the author’s own youth is reflected in the protagonist's statement in the “ぬるい毒”(2011) that "everything is decided at the age of 23." The young women of Motoya's novels are misaligned, out of self-control, and spread their sadness and anger like poison to those around them. At the same time, they constantly yearn to be connected to something. In the third chapter, I explore how these protagonists form relationships with others and what significance these others hold for them. Additionally, I argue that the lonely elderly woman in the “自分を好きになる方法”(2013) represents the future of the female protagonists who have appeared in Motoya's novels so far.
