This study examines the common experiences of eco-sports participants as they progress toward pro-environmental behaviors using the recreation specialization model. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with experienced eco-sports participants engaged in pro-environmental behaviors, and the collected data were transcribed and analyzed.
The findings indicate that the recreation specialization process for eco-sports participants consists of five stages: interest, entry, maintenance, activation, and specialization maintenance. Throughout these stages, participants transitioned into pro-environmental behaviors, progressing through entry, maintenance, autonomous specialization, and expansive specialization. A key factor in this transition was the experience of transfer, leading to the proposal of a modified recreation specialization cycle model. Additionally, obstacles such as criticism from opposing groups and fear of persuasion hindered pro-environmental behavior, while traits like empathy for the vulnerable, a spirit of service, and an emotional connection to nature facilitated engagement. Enjoyment in eco-sports played a crucial role in sustaining participation and fostering environmental sensitivity.
This study provides valuable insights into the process of eco-sports participation leading to pro-environmental behavior specialization. The findings contribute to understanding behavioral change through sports and serve as foundational data for developing eco-sports programs that promote pro-environmental engagement.
