The article explores the east-german propaganda of the late 1950s and 1960s, specially attacking on the insufficiency of the denazification in West Germany. There are many studies of the mastering of the Nazi Past. However, it is hardly to find the studies of the relationship between the purge of the Nazi Past and the Cold War. To fill up this gap, this paper argues that the mastering of the Nazi Past must be influenced by the Cold War.
At the End of 1950s, the east-german regime was confronted with a very serious crisis, as a result of the process of the socialist system building. In order to escape from the internal crisis, the regime intensified, particularly, the political propaganda against West Germany, blaming West Germany as “a fascist state,” and emphasizing east-germany as “a better state”. Meanwhile, the west-german regime accused the east-germen system as “a red fascism,” identified with the Nazism.
Thus, The problem of mastering of the Nazi Past was used as a weapon in the Cold War era which created a political confrontation and mutual reactions of East and West Germany. Focusing on these aspects, this study proves that the propaganda related to the mastering of the Nazi Past was falsely not only influenced by the political situation of the cold war but also contributed the interrelationship of both states despite divided germany.
