This paper examines three American newspapers in their coverage of ordinary topics and the September 11, 2001 attacks in order to define discourse functions of direct quotes in press reportage. Three new functions of newspaper quotes are revealed in addition to the previously suggested functions of 'factuality', 'neutrality' and 'expressiveness'. These new functions have to do with 'narrative construction', 'expert contribution' and 'personal involvement'. The corpus for the study consists of news articles from Los Angeles Times, New York Times and Washington Post. It comprises 150 articles and around 150 thousand words. To uncover the nature of direct quotes in press reportage, various ways to put direct quotes in the news story are examined first. Secondly, the question as to who is more often than not direct-quoted is raised. And, finally, types of vocabulary are investigated that constitute direct quotes themselves.
