Today, there are some problems in the trade process when documents arrive later than the related goods at the port of destination. That is, although the goods have arrived at the port of destination, the documents are still in seller's nation, are en-route or have been separated from the goods somehow and as a result the trade process slows or stops awaiting the documentation. These problems bring about incidental problems such as business delays or extra charges and these are connected with a weakness of competitive power in the international trade transaction. Under these circumstances, all parties to the trade transaction may benefit from use of an e- Trade system. Nowadays, the notion of e-Trade is changing to the notion of u-Trade,
U-Trade can be explained as a trade transaction where all of the parties to the transaction can access, anytime, anywhere the transaction process in real-time utilising information technology which is fixed or mobile utilising the internet etc. Thus, u-Trade is extending the idea of e- Trade.
This paper examines a development strategy for e-L/C in u-Trade through an empirical study. Exploring related e-L/C and innovation literatures, we examine some variables which have an influence on e- L/C utilization. The results show that the usefulness and non-financial performance are the strongest factors as to when a trade company will start to utilise e-L/C in the future. This means that a trade company has the expectancy of a faster service, greater convenience and decreasing errors in documents when an e- L/C is utilised by all parties to the trade transaction.
