The purpose of this study is to examine the criteria of the Yahweh"s kingship passages in the prophecies of the eighth-century prophet Isaiah 1-12(the situation of Isaiah 1-12 is the early works of First Isaiah, period of Syro-Ephraimite conspiracy 735 B.C.) The thesis is that the criteria of the Yahweh"s kingship passages are all inherent in and foundational to prophetic hope oracles(Isa 2:2-4; 4:2-6; 9:1-6; 11:1-5) in Isaiah 1-12.
Isa 2:2-4 primarily reflects the theme of the defeat of the enemy nations within Zion tradition. Since it is particularly this aspect of the Zion tradition that stands behind Yahweh"s plan against the nations in Isaiah"s preaching. Moreover, since Yahweh"s kingship is the fundamental presupposition of the Zion tradition and is also closely bound up with Yahweh"s plans and decision.
Isaiah 4:2-6 again marks a sharp shift in content from the oracles of judgment. After Yahweh had executed his judgment and cleansed Jerusalem from its moral filth, a remnant that has survived will be deemed holy. Then God will again make the land glorious and Zion will become a city of sacred assemblies like davidic covenant.
Isaiah 9:1-6 reflects the theme of davidic dynasty within davidic covenant. Yahweh"s kingship is the foundation of his plan to defend Zion and its king, the basis for the establishment of his justice and righteousness, the presupposition of his judgment of his own people, and, finally the criterion and the power behind the establishment of Zion in peace and the righteous of the king. In all of this areas Yahweh"s kingship is not only the point of departure for thesis realization but is also the goal itself.
Isaiah 11:1-5 describes the future king in terms of his character and his activity as a ruler. Isaiah saw davidic monarchy as Yahweh"s means of implementing Yahweh"s will, first for Judah and Jerusalem and then for the world as a whole. In later period, the hope for such a king was linked more and more to the fulfillment of God"s will for his kingship.
Through the above investigation, this study concludes that the prophet Isaiah utilized the theme of Yahweh"s kingship in Isaiah 1-12 to validate Judah"s crisis and to help his people have hope.
