Domestic fowl still tend to exhibit behaviors, such as perching, nesting and dust-bathing, that is very similar to those of their ancestor the red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus) despite being domesticated for 8,000 years. If given the opportunity, these animals choose high places to stay in at night and dark places for laying eggs and perform dust bathing in areas with litter. Therefore, these behaviors are considered to play very important roles in improving the welfare of laying hens. In the EU and some countries, farmers must provide perches, nests and litter for the housing of laying hens. Understanding of the behavior of laying hens can lead to enhancements in their physical health, emotional conditions and welfare. Unfortunately, there is little information about the behavior of laying hens in Korea. Therefore, we researched the literature regarding the specific behaviors of laying hens.
