Over the last 10 years, the study on creative writing has been on the rise as a new trend in studying college writing.
About 22 research papers published between 2006 and 2015 fall under the category. Focusing the performance of preceding studies in college writing, the discussions to date can be summarized as follows. First, with regard to the question ‘what is creativity?’, the preceding studies embrace general meanings of creativity variously as theoretical bases. Such meanings of creativity include ① creative problem-solving as cognitive processes, ② a creative person’s cognitive and affective capabilities, ③ creative products, and so on. Secondly, on the question of ‘what is creative writing?’, the preceding researches offer the definitions of creative writing. There are 3 definitions: ① writing as creative problem-solving, ② creative writing as divergent thinking, and ③ creative writing as self-healing self-realization. Thirdly, with regard to ‘what are the tools that spur creative writing?’, the preceding studies suggest some tools stimulating creativity. They include ‘reading books’, ‘watching movies’, ‘appreciating paintings’, ‘creativity teaching materials’, ‘metaphor structure’, ‘breaking stereotype’, ‘knowledge on brain science’, ‘problem-solving creative writing model’, ‘secret plot setting’, etc. Fourthly, the preceding studies offer a few suggestions on ‘what are some challenges for future education and study on creative writing?’ They are suggestions for lecturers, learners, education curriculum, education environment, research subjects, and the like. These suggestions are ideal and productive for creative writing. However, one cannot say that there is no problem in the preceding studies. The complacency seen in adopting general meanings of creativity, the absence of exquisite analysis in definition of creative writing, the development of weighted creativity stimulating tools, etc. can be pointed out as problems.
