This paper aims to discover how the meanings of "xiuci" influence Chinese rhetoric studies by checking the usage of "xiuci" in classical works, and to show the developing course of Chinese rhetoric from decorating speech to linguistic corp. We focus on the new approaches after Mr. Chen Wangdao, who established the modern rhetoric, and in which, there are four main paradigms at the present time, relatively represented by Liu Dawei, Hu Fanzhu, Tan Xuechun, and Liu Yameng. We try to show their characteristics and the keys of contemporary Chinese rhetoric studies In addition, we argue that the approach of studying rhetorical phenomena together with grammatical methods is the main stream of present rhetoric studies.
In this paper, we try to show the change of Chinese thought through probing the development of Chinese rhetoric, while predicting the possible directions and future of Chinese rhetoric, to help readers understanding Chinese rhetoric.
