This study attempts to characterize the social capital of Korean Protestant Church and to explore how it can contribute to Korean community capacity. First, Through preceding research analysis, I argued the relationship community capacity, social capital and the church. Second, I analyzed the social capital of Korean Protestant Church. Third, this study suggested the ways that churches can contribute to community capacity by developing positive social capital.
Korean Protestant Church is produced by the trust in private relationships, the norm of limited reciprocity, the network closed into church. This social capital may give some benefits to their own congregations but not to community. In order to contribute to community capacity, Protestant Church in Korea efforts to achieve public trust, develop the attitude to the others from exclusivity into tolerance, establish some institutional safeguards for norms of reciprocity, and build ties to bridge other particular groups in Korean society.
Recently, there has been an growing interest in ‘social capital’ as a part of various community capacity. Social capital is one of the foundation of community building and empowerment. Churches are a good source of social capital that empower community capacity. Protestant Church in Korea should throw away the image of ‘church community’ as a closed system, but have open door to community for ‘the community.’
