The research field of ancient history of Korea published a lot of noticeable source books, papers, and books for the last two years. They contributed to the broadening base of historical records and the partial advancement of new methodologies, but it is difficult to say that they reinforced the quality level of ancient history research overall. It is the result of college and national research support projects that place importance on quantitative evaluation. The outcomes include the absence of theoretical researches in the field of ancient history, researchers" avoidance of macroscopic researches, and the chronic internal issue of worsening inclination toward certain areas among researchers and research topics. In addition, pseudo-historians are attacking the history circles from the perspectives of nationalism and ultranationalism in the projects of national research institutes by resorting to the political power.
These internal and external environments mean that the research of ancient history is facing a crisis, which can be overcome by both individual researchers and researcher groups and societies making active efforts to increase the quality of research internally and also joint efforts to improve the research environment. Researchers also need to have a contemplation over what to do in the area of ancient history to promote a mature perception of history in the civil society. It is time to reflect on whether researches separate from the society under the pretense of fact and proof created a background for the emergence of “pseudo-history.”
