The purpose of this study was to investigate biomechanical differences between Nordic walking and normal walking from the perspective of normalized gait cycle. Five young people (age: 22 ± 1year, height: 165.26 ± 7.18 cm, mass: 68.16 ± 10.08 kg) voluntarily participated in this study and performed two types of walking such as Nordic walking with poles and normal walking without anything. Eight high speed cameras and two force plates were used to collect data of motions and ground reaction forces, respectively. After data filtering, kinematic analysis and inverse dynamic analysis were performed to obtain kinematic and kinetic data of two types of gait. Wilcox paired test was used to test mean differences of two types of gait at each percent of normalized gait cycle. Results indicated that linear gait parameters of two types of gait were not different but there is a tendency of slower cadence with slightly longer step length of Nordic walking. In stance phase hip and knee flexion angles of Nordic walking were greater and in swing phase ankle plantar flexion angle of Nordic walking was smaller than those of normal walking. Regarding joint moment, hip joint demonstrated higher extension moment and smaller flexion moment during stance phase. Conclusively, Nordic walking tended to use hip joint motion actively more than normal walking.
