This article critiques the scholarly tradition that unduly emphasizes the role of Neo-Confucianism in explaining the cause of various historical phenomena in the Joseon Dynasty, including its fall. Specifically, it takes issue with the said tradition for the following reasons: First, being the governing ideology of the kingdom, Neo-Confucianism can be linked to every historical phenomenon of the Joseon Dynasty, but to say Neo-Confucianism is the cause of a historical phenomenon is not much different from attributing the cause of re to oxygen in the air; Second, as Neo-Confucianism intersected with various other factors in creating a complex web of causal relationships with the historical phenomenon in a given time period or locale, the nature and extent of its influence cannot but vary. As such, framing Neo-Confucianism as a single, dominant cause of a historical phenomenon merely leads to ideological reductionism, which does not much help expand our understanding of the complexity of historical events; Third, when uncritically adopted, such perspectives may border on pseudo-science – whose arguments are based on a universal proposition, such as “all history is unfolded by an idea” – or resort to the dualism that “human behaviors correspond to ideas.” However, as human activities are the product of various factors including conscience, the order of conduct cannot be reduced to the order of consciousness. us, critical efforts are required to carefully consider various and complex factors behind historical phenomena, rejecting a single causal relationship in explaining them.
