The purpose of this study is to improve production quality of heavy duty oil pan by failure analysis and process improvement for prevent the engine failure cause by molding sand and shot ball. The failure phenomenon is identified through the overhaul of the engine, the Fishbone Tree Analysis(FTA) was used to identify the cause analysis and failure mechanisms. And the effectiveness of improvement was verified through the finite element analysis and the field test for the improved design of the engine oil pan. The results of this study are as follows: it was identified the failure mechanism by foreign matter in the casting heavy duty engine oil pan. The inside of the oil pan was designed as a simple structure of the open in order to with stand the load and minimize the foreign matter and fraction defective. It was proposed the improved design framework consider to meet the robustness and quality of production at the same time and the effectiveness of the improvement was verified.
