This study is to understand Japanese classes and teaching culture by Korean teachers’ culturaland historical lens, after observing the videotaped Japanese Language studies class and collectivelyinquire into its similarity and differences in comparison between Japanese and Korean classes. To figure out its characteristics of this class, researchers requested to 15 teachers who are partof the curriculum research program at CJUE and as following questions: 1. Is the story usedin the Japanese classroom suitable for 5th grade Korean class?; 2. What class objects would beappropriate for this story if selected?; 3. If the same objective is set as the Japanese class, thenhow would the class be designed?; 4. What are the similar and dissimilar traits between Koreanand Japanese curriculum? As a result of the research, the teachers viewed the text ‘The restaurant of many orders’ whichused as material this class to be complicated, poly-semantic, and socially critical. And they tendedto draw and use moral lessons from this story when designing the class. When asked how theywould design the class with the same objective as the Japanese teacher, many suggested similaractivities as the ones used by the Japanese teacher, but many wanted to incorporate physicalactivities such as re-writing, drawing out the scenes, making their own books, etc. Overall, theyidentified Japanese class to be quiet and calm, and Korean classes dynamic and active.
