This study conducted a field case investigation and analysis on public signs on modern streets in regenerated urban area that functions as the hub as a representative tourist attraction of Korea and Japan to suggest direction of sustainable colors of public signs. As a result, this study drew the following implications. First, according to the result of analyzing the field case investigation of comparing Incheon and Gunsan, Korea, it was identified that Yokohama and Gobe, Japan is considering 5 more elements of field case investigation than Korea. Specially, Japan was continuously maintaining color environment of the entire region by considering a relationship with surrounding scenery and reflecting historicity and characteristics of the place. Secondly, in waterfront areas as MinatoMirai21 of Yokohama and Harborland of Kobe, urban image and symbolism were being expressed by applying colors that reflected color image and characteristics of space. Thirdly, most signs were considering explicitness as an element that makes a significant effect on the informational role of public signs, but attractiveness of public signs or universal design aspect require supplementation. Fourthly, it was identified that all 4 areas are considering harmony between public signs and surrounding environment. However, it would be necessary to attempt various changes as symbolic element of the region or connection with representative color because it may appear monotonous. The significance of this study is that this study was conducted on public signs on very important modern streets with a very big role in terms of characteristics of the locations. It is expected that applying the findings on pubic signs would have positive effect on improving identity and image of modern streets in urban regeneration area.
