In this article, I present a comparative study on “The Dusky Room,” published in Shika by Sakutaro Hagiwara in November 1917 and “To my Bedroom,” published in Hakucho by Sang-hwa Lee in September 1923. The concept of space in the poetic literature is concerned with not only a geographical meaning and notion but also the situation of the work in question and the emotive meaning expressed by the poet. The concept of space is thus useful when one delves into the reality of the work. It is therefore essential to analyse the concept of space described in the aforementioned poetic works. Most previous studies on Sakutaro which mention Korean poets for comparative purposes analyse Sang-hwa’s works. Sang-hwa is known as a poet who was directly influenced by the poems of Sakutaro. In the present study, I aim to surpass previous banal comparative analyses which only deal with a direct relation between the two poets, in order to enhance the quality of comparative work. Furthermore, I focus on Sang-hwa, who stayed in Japan at the time when Sakutaro lived, in order to explicate what has eluded our attention in the modern transformational process of Korean poems. In particular, I consider the meaning and characteristics of each work, which reflects the space of a bedroom, together with the Muse of each poet. I also aim to analyse in explicit terms the parallelism and differences between the two poets through the analysis of the two poems from various points of view of modern Korean-Japanese poems.
