This study examines whether the use of honorifics in a conflict situation between couples has positive benefits for the relationship by affecting emotion-related variables. A total of 76 college students read scenarios of conflict between couples and wrote their words with honorifics or plain forms, and then responded self-reported to emotions, emotion regulation strategies, norms of emotional expressions, conflict coping methods, and relationship satisfaction. The results revealed differences between the honorifics group and the plain forms group in all variables. The honorifics group showed less anger, higher suppression, higher cognitive reappraisal, higher norm of emotional expression, higher relationship satisfaction, and lower negative emotional behavior expression among conflict coping methods. In addition, the mediating effects of cognitive reappraisal and negative emotional behavior expression were found to be significant in the relationship between language type and relationship satisfaction. In other words, it was confirmed that the use of honorifics in conflict situations had positive effects on relationship satisfaction by regulating emotions and reducing directly expressing negative emotions. This study is meaningful in that it examines the role of the language system (honorifics / plain forms), a culture-specific communication system in Korea, in the conflict situations between couples.
