From Korean literature/German literature to "literature" - on the direction of the literature description is a reflection about the theme of Korean literature study. There are seven items.
① Individually branched titles like "Korean literature" or "German literature" are necessary, but at the same time, they are inessential categories. We have to see beyond each national, racial and cultural system. In this situation, human beings and his reality could be eventually recognized in its entirety. ② We should be able to understand the object in a network, in a whole configuration. ③Considering the whole context is important, but it should start from the concrete experiences of an each individual. Literature values the destiny of personal experiences than anything else. But literary criticism, different from writing literature, should be opened to the literature which puts emphasis on personal truth and be good at the conceptual argument too.
④ Literature writes about an object, and at the same time, it writes about itself. Namely, it practices the double-reflection. In order to do so, it should be able to be deconstructive and constructive at once. This is "a dialectic of deconstruction and construction". ⑤ What"s needed here is above all the training of philosophy. The novelist must reveal the hidden rear of reality and the whole world through his own sense and thinking. ⑥ The interest on the entirety of world should be extended to the eternity. Therefore, a literary man must incarnate the sense of eternity, whether he is a writer or a critic.
⑦ All the six things which I have mentioned before must be converged to a particular thing - the reality here and now. The literary man should take notice of the current life, and at the same time, he should be able to perform the 6 points constantly. When he is able to show this process of practice through language exactly, a new horizon of literary research could be opened for a while.
