Through an analysis of how gift and trade change the human nature in Kai no Hi, this study aims to elucidate the message that the children’s literarue seeks to convey to its listeners and readers.
Homoi, a bunny, saves a young skylark from drowning in a river, and receives the treasure called Kai no Hi from the king of the birds. It is similar to opal, and is also considered to be a gem of misfortune, since it is said to be very difficult to handle. Homoi’s father urges Homoi to take good care of Kai no Hi, but such advice is merely superficial, as the characters are not aware of what it truly means to take good care of this treasure.
Kai no Hi is an ambilateral tool that turns Homoi into a figure who is greatly praised by other animals on one hand, but drags him into the pit of vanity on the other hand. Homoi harasses other animals to fulfill his selfishness, and even turning a blind eye to a fox devouring a chicken. In the end, the heroic image of Homoi gave way to an evil one.
As a result, Kai no Hi that was glowing brilliantly turns white and shatters, while at the same time blinding Homoi. Homoi’s loss of sight is certainly a self-sacrifice, but is relatively a small suffering. Kai no Hi is a fairy tale that sternly warns what can happen when the balance between gain and loss is upset by endless human greed.
