Teaching reading strategies has attracted a large number of researchers and it is one of the most promising areas in L2 acquisition. This study attempted to combine teaching reading strategies with portfolio development. A total number of 65 college students participated in this study. The control group had 32 participants and the experimental group was composed of 33 subjects. Before and after the treatment, both groups took reading comprehension tests and responded to strategy questionnaires. The experimental group also engaged in portfolio development along with portfolio checklists and reflected on their portfolios. Based on quantitative analyses by t-tests, the experimental group showed a higher increase in their reading strategy use as well as better reading comprehension. In addition, the experimental group also recognized positive effects of portfolio work in reading classes, which was revealed in their portfolio checklists and reflections on their portfolios. Pedagogical implications along with suggestions for future studies are discussed.
