Narrative phenomena are always changing. As the openness of genres and media are increased, narrative is changing to the phenomenon of culture convergence. In narrative education, too, it is needed to adopt new concept to reflect such changes of narrative phenomena. In a way of it, this study aims to analyze 〈The Tale of Arang〉-based story contents and suggest new concept needed for narrative education.
First, Chapter 2 analyzes the types of storytelling in 〈The Tale of Arang〉 -based story contents and examines what need to be considered in narrative education largely in two parts. The first one is to restore orality. 〈The Tale of Arang〉-based story contents use different kinds of media characteristics and restore orality that 〈The Tale of Arang〉 originally had. As orality is restored, relationship between the story creator and the receiver is newly established. The second one is genre convention and its conversion. 〈The Tale of Arang〉-based story contents produce new stories sometimes following the genre convention of horror materials and sometimes violating it. In order to produce and receive a story in narrative education, too, it is needed to consider genre convention that certain story contents belong to.
Next, Chapter 3 suggests the concept of narrative education to embrace the new narrative phenomena. They may include ‘lacunae in stories’, ‘complex narrative’, and ‘strata of speakers’, etc. Although these concepts have been frequently discussed in previous narrative theory, this article re-conceptualizes them in the context of narrative education. The goal of narrative education is to foster learners who participate in the narrative world critically and subjectively. The concepts suggested in this paper allow them to recognize the production and acceptance of narrative as a series of activities and provide crucial implications to attain the goal of narrative education.
