This review essay traces a historiography of American history in Korea over the past two years (2015~2016) to examine its significant changes and recent trends and, in so doing, aims to put the studies of American history in Korea into perspective.
In general, the field of medical history, slavery, and African-Americans as well as women’s and the twentieth-century political history rank among the liveliest subjects. The studies of race, immigration, city, education, culture, and diplomacy have been stable. However, the evolution of research on American religion, military, corporate, and capitalism has not taken the attention they deserve. The lack of interest in those subfield has been chronic because of the scarcity of the related researchers. In that those subfields might be on the total decline, historians need to pay attention to them and to find a solution for their revival.
Considering the limited number of historians majoring American history in Korea, it goes too far in saying that the studies of American history are too scanty. Just for that reason, however, it is all the more important for the historians to make collective and self-conscious efforts for the well-balanced development of the studies of American history. We can no longer postpone making research plans that would be able to revive the declining subfields. The delicate job of designing the plan for the well-balanced research on American history remains to be done.
