This historiographical essay aims to understand American historical scholarship in Korea by reflecting the recent historical research of the United States and providing projections about the future direction. From 2017 to 2018, eighty-nine journal articles and four history books were published in Korea. American historical scholarship was being decentralized in Korea by medical history, women’s history, and immigration/race studies. These three areas deconstructed the hierarchical center of American historical scholarship and enlarged the research fields of the history of the United States. However, this essay also found very strong attempts to recentralize the scholarship for the last two years. The vector for recentralization came from the fields of political history and diplomatic history. Armed with new methodologies such as history from below and transnationalism, political and diplomatic historians struggled to retain their previous mainstream position in the historical scholarship. This essay maintains that such an academic competition in terms of decentralization and recentralization contributed to the development of American historical research in Korea. It also proved that it is just an illusion to believe that there is a permanent mainstream or a fixed and unchangeable tradition in the field of American history.
