Barthold Georg Niebuhr(1776~1831) has been acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of modern scholarly historiography. There seems to be no sufficient evidences demonstrated, wherein he deserves the reputation. The paper examines his works and evaluations of him and tries to confirm his position in the development of European historiography.
Niebuhr"s critical method was a result of long-term development of German linguistics and philology since seventeenth and eighteenth century. Therefore, it is not appropriate to find his main contribution to the development of modern Western historiography in his application of critical method in historical study. The point is, whether Niebuhr really satisfied his own demands with his historical writings. He projected his anticipated future Prussia to the early Roman history. As a result, he couldn"t abide by his own methodological rules. His limit comes out more apparently, when we compare him to Leopold von Ranke who proposed a method of ‘self-elimination(Sich-ausloschen)’ to attain academic objectivity. For the same reason, the younger generations of professional historians in 19th century kept their distance from him increasingly. Therefore, it is difficult to regard him one of the fathers of modern historiography. He surely broke the way to the modern science of history, but didn"t walk along the way. In that sense, we could call him grandfather of modern historiography.
